Born 1952, Brooklyn, New York, Pam Cabañas has lived and worked in Friendship, Maine since 2004. She holds a BFA, painting and hand lithography, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and an MA in Art Education, University of New Mexico. Pam has taught art and photography at the high school level through the university level both in New Mexico and New York. Following a crooked path of endeavors in the world of antiques, motherhood, and the decorative arts, Pam finally finds her place as a fine artist. She draws inspiration from a coastal fishing village at the tip of a peninsula in the great state of Maine and the archipelago of islands stretching from the Friendship shores.
Pam continues to paint both en plein air, travelling to remote coastal island locations in her skiff, as well as attacking much larger studio work inspired by her deep involvement in the history, the present, and the unique nature of her coastal community. Recently Pam has stepped back in time to her days involved in the ceramic arts using sgraffito techniques on porcelain to create works emblematic of the Maine Coast.
In 2017, Pam and her son Eli purchased the derelict East Friendship School House, circa 1850. SALT POND STUDIO has become a thriving studio and gallery space exhibiting Pam’s work as well as hosting guest artist exhibitions, workshops, and weekly life drawing sessions.
